Prof. Carlos Zavala is both Argentine and Italian. He received his bachelor degree from Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina in 1987 and PhD from the same university in 1993. From 1994 to 1996, he worked as a post-doctor in the University of Parma, Italy. Since 1992, he has been working as an assistant professor in the Universidad Nacional del Sur. In addition, he also works as a senior researcher of CONICET (Consejo de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Argentina), Consulting geologist in sedimentology at GEOIL – PDVSA, Senior Geologist / President of GCS of Argentina and Scientific Consultant of PetroChina Company Limited.

His research is focused on sediment gravity flow and hyperpycnal flow deposits in marine and lacustrine basins. He is a member of several academic societies, including the Society for Sedimentary Geology, International Association of Sedimentologists, Geological Society of America, American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and Asociación Geológica Argentina. He has published over 80 journal papers and chapters in books.
