Prof. Franz T. Fürsich is German. He is a retired professor of palaeontology from the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg where he used to hold the chair of palaeontology in the Geozentrum Nordbayern of the same university.

His research is focusing on Mesozoic aquatic ecosystems, shell concentrations, taxonomy of Mesozoic bivalves, trace fossils, taphonomy of aquatic organisms, palaeoecology and facies analysis of Mesozoic basins in Iran, Uzbekistan, China, Brazil, India and Europe. He is the Associate-Editor-in-Chief and one of editorial board members of the Journal of Palaeogeography. He has published over 300 journal papers and chapters in books, with a total citation of over 10000 times and an h-index of 54.
