Prof. Zhidong Bao is a professor and Vice President of China University of Petroleum (Beijing). In 1986 and 1989, he received a bachelor's degree in geology and a master's degree in mineral deposit geology from Hefei University of Technology. In 1993, he graduated from China University of Petroleum (Beijing) with a doctorate degree in coalfield petroleum geology and exploration. In 2000, he was a senior visiting scholar at University of Miami.

Prof. Bao serves as an assessment expert for the National Science and Technology Award, the China Scholarship Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Paleaogeography.

Prof. Bao is mainly engaged in teaching and scientific research of sedimentary geology and oil exploitation geology, reservoir geology, reservoir description, hydrocarbon accumulation, and exploration and development of geothermal resources. Prof. Bao has published more than 160 academic papers in journals such as Sedimentary Geology, Carbonates and Evaporites, Journal of Geology, and Chinese Science. He has co-authored 17 monographs and textbooks. In recent years, he has won 5 first prizes and second prizes for teaching and research achievements at the national and provincial levels.
